The Stars Aligning in Soccer
My day job is at the Philadelphia Furniture Bank, where I spend my time helping case managers and their clients coming out of crisis situations select furniture for their new home. But my rest-of-the-time job is mom to my seven-year-old son. Until last week, these worlds really haven’t collided, but when my son decided to play soccer in our neighborhood, he was assigned to a team. Seventeen sponsored teams, only 1 of which was a nonprofit – and what team was he placed on? New Courtland Senior Services, a member of the Philadelphia Furniture Bank -- the stars aligned!
New Courtland is one of the newest members of the Philadelphia Furniture Bank, and their desire for their clients and their agency to be engaged with the community is at the core of their mission. Through New Courtland, seniors are able to get affordable housing and regain their independence. Recently they’ve been able to expand to a new location on Henry Avenue. This gives them the ability to help more seniors who are in need of supportive services obtain affordable housing. John Ungar, Director of Housing and Project Management at New Courtland, says, “The Philadelphia Furniture Bank is a fantastic resource for both New Courtland and our residents. We are able to provide furniture to residents in need at a much lower cost than in the past, and the residents are able to select their own furniture, which furthers our mission of enabling them to live as independently as possible.”
The Philadelphia Furniture Bank serves clients from more than forty member agencies in a variety of crisis situations, including people experiencing homelessness, fire, flood or hurricane relocation, family reunification, or domestic violence.
