Your 2024 Spring Cleaning Guide
Spring cleaning is a sign that better weather is on the way. As our days get longer and we get more sunshine, it feels like an appropriate time to reset our homes and finish those cleaning and decluttering projects to enjoy the better weather.
Tackling spring cleaning can feel overwhelming, but it does not have to! Taste of Home assembled a room-by-room spring cleaning checklist to help you stay on track, and we used that list as inspiration to put together our tips. You can check out their list for more specific tasks and the list below for some general tips by room.
It’s important to remember that many items encountered throughout spring cleaning could either be given away or donated instead of discarded. Good Haul, Philly’s only nonprofit junk haulers, will pick up anything you need to be taken away for a competitive fee. Not only are you clearing space in your home, but your usable items will be redistributed to local nonprofits as much as possible. Let’s reduce waste, reuse (or give away items to neighbors), and recycle as much as possible this Spring!
- Entryway: It is the first thing you see when you walk into the house, so it is the perfect place to start. Declutter any surfaces that may have accumulated mail or other items. Consider swapping in spring jackets and shoes and setting aside winter items you no longer need.
- Kitchen: The kitchen, our most useful space, is often the messiest. Start slow and take your time. There’s no race for the cleanest house first. Start with one area and work your way around the kitchen. Discarding expired items in your cabinets and pantry area is a great starting point to help clear space for future organization.
- Dining Area: Whether you use a dining room or not, thoroughly wiping down and dusting chairs and other hard surfaces is essential to resetting the space. Do you have items you last used over a year ago or a buffet table taking up too much space? Good Haul will take it!
- Bathroom: What’s better than a sparkling clean bathroom? In addition to the usual areas, take extra care to clean hard-to-reach places, like under the sink, behind the toilet, and on shower shelves. Also, consider cleaning your medicine cabinet and adequately discarding expired or empty personal care products or medications.
- Laundry Room: Check out your linens after you clear your lint trap and clean your dryer vent. Do you have decent sheets or towels that you no longer need?
- Bedrooms: Organizing closets and dressers will inevitably create piles of clothing that need to be donated or trashed. Creating dedicated piles for sorting can help you stay organized while cleaning. Call Good Haul, and we’ll pick up your trash and your "donate-able" items!
- Living Room: Your vacuum will be on overdrive as you work through your carpets, rugs, and furniture. Once that is finished, take a second to look through your décor, books, and other miscellaneous items. Is there anything that you can offload to spend less time dusting in the future?
- Office: We all have those old electronics, chargers, and other miscellaneous cords we hold onto just in case. And, of course, those great boxes that your new phone came in that you are not quite sure what to do with. Could you set those items aside to be recycled?
- Garage: Do you have old appliances that need to be recycled? Bicycles, lawn decorations, or trash that needs to be decluttered? Now is a great time to gather it all together to sweep the entire garage floor and reset it for the spring.
Once you reach the near end of your cleaning, Good Haul is an excellent option for removing all the items you set aside to get rid of. We will donate all usable items to our nonprofit partners, including the Philadelphia Furniture Bank. We will recycle what is reusable and trash the items that cannot be repurposed. Now that your house is on its way to being clutter-free enjoy the refreshed cleanliness of your home and even potential tax benefits while we handle the rest!
