Why Housing Development?

We believe that having decent, affordable housing is a social determinant of health and wellness, because:

  • Unhoused people die 20-30 years earlier than housed people.
  • Philadelphia has a 25% poverty rate, one of the highest in the nation. Of that 25%, half are living in deep poverty.
  • In Philadelphia, a person has to work 106 hours per week at minimum wage to afford a modest one bedroom apartment.
  • Pennsylvania's SSI payment is only $750 per month, while the average fair market rent for a one bedroom apartment is well over $1,000 per month.

We are building that housing. Our community is facing steep hurdles, and we are in a position to develop safe, affordable, sustainable supportive housing that will lift up our communities.
