Webinar Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on addiction recovery services has led to a drastic increase in the rate of fatal overdoses for people with opioid use disorder (OUD). While these overdose deaths have increased across all income groups, unhoused and socially vulnerable populations have seen increased mortality and continued barriers in accessing medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) treatment. To effectively combat this trend, providers have recognized a need to accelerate healthcare innovations that support OUD treatment access and retention, improve social determinants or health, and increase opportunities for peer support.

As such, Pathways to Housing PA, in partnership with MDRC and the Shared Housing Institute, is excited to offer this free 90-minute training on HomePath SMA— a Shared Medical Appointments (SMA) intervention for people living with OUD who are experiencing housing instability.

Featuring Drs. Lara Carson Weinstein and Erin Kelly of Thomas Jefferson University, this webinar will provide an overview of the SMA model, and evidence supporting its efficacy, highlighting lessons learned, clinical approaches, and implementation results. Following a brief instructional presentation, presenters will demonstrate the SMA group appointment model, which utilizes interdisciplinary clinical teams to address interrelated medical, physical, and social needs of 8-12 program participants in the same appointment.

Subsequently, a group of non-profit healthcare executives, addiction medicine specialists, and other stakeholders will participate in a panel discussion about the strengths, challenges, and opportunities of SMA treatment for people experiencing OUD and housing insecurity, followed by an open Q&A.
