Homelessness Service Fundamentals: Housing First and Harm Reduction
January 14, 2021 from 1:00- 2:00 PM EST
Many housing agencies are incorporating progressive, person-centered strategies in their service provision, but not all remain genuinely committed to high fidelity Housing First and harm reduction practice. What happens when program participants present with repeated behavioral concerns and eviction notices? How do we, as providers, navigate difficult decisions while preserving both the therapeutic alliance and landlord relationships? In this workshop, we’ll discuss how providers can promote safety, communication, and participant self-determination simultaneously; Strategies for engaging landlords and stakeholders in your mission; Circumventing barriers for our most vulnerable participants; Who you should be partnering with; What accountability looks like through a harm reduction lens; and more. Panelists will address what the application of Housing First and harm reduction theory looks like in practice, dispel common myths about these models, and provide guidance for adaptive challenges.

Housing as Trauma-Informed Care
10:00-11:00 am EST
The Housing First model borrows heavily from the core competencies of trauma-informed care, but rarely is housing spoken of as an element of trauma-informed practice itself. Whether it be transitional, episodic, or chronic, the experience of homelessness is traumatizing. Considering Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, how can we expect those currently experiencing homelessness to engage with us in treatment and begin healing? In this workshop, we’ll explore how trauma and homelessness intersect and interact, discuss social determinants of health for those experiencing homelessness, and explore why access to adequate housing should be one of the key steps in any trauma-informed intervention.
