Position Summary:

The Philadelphia Furniture Bank is a non-profit that provides used furniture to people coming out of homelessness.

The Driver/Warehouse Assistant primarily drives the truck to and from the warehouse to deliver furniture to the recipients’ homes and picks up furniture from donors and community partners. S/he will need to load and unload the truck with furniture and represent the Philadelphia Furniture Bank’s mission in all settings. S/he will also help organize the warehouse and assist with the daily operational needs of the Furniture Bank. The Driver/Warehouse Assistant will support the mission of the supported employment project through Pathways to Housing PA and will be pivotal in acting as a role model for those coming to work at the Furniture Bank. This position will have significant interaction with staff, supported employment employees, volunteers, donors, community partners and other community members.

 Compensation: $21/hourly

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Load, deliver, and unload items chosen by recipients
  • Load, unload, and sort donated furniture from organizations and individual homes.
  • Assist donors, member agency/program staff, and recipients in the warehouse
  • Provide daily direction to other employees and volunteers assisting with duties
  • Work alongside and direct volunteers, where applicable
  • Assure that volunteers are treated with respect and dignity regardless of race, ethnic background, gender or socioeconomic background
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service training and staff development programs, professional meetings, conferences and related programs as requested.

Essential Education, Experience and Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Good organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills and ability to work on a team
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability and willingness to build positive working relationships with very diverse populations
  • Self-motivated with an ability to prioritize and problem-solve, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to drive a 16' or longer box truck
  • Valid Pennsylvania State Driver's license and clean driving record
  • Ability to use a GPS

  • Ability to speak, hear, and communicate effectively over the phone and in person with customers and internal staff
  • Operate all equipment, computers, keyboards, and phone necessary to perform the job. 
  • Clean driving record, with ability and comfort in driving a 16’ box truck.
  • Ability to push and pull 41-100 pounds multiple times per day while handling furniture 
  • Ability to be both indoor and outdoor while transporting furniture 
  • Ability to constantly reach outward while handling furniture and occasionally reach above shoulder 
  • Ability to spend the majority of the day standing, traveling, and walking while handling furniture and occasionally sitting, climbing, squatting kneeling, and bending 
  • The employee is expected to adhere to all agency policies and to act as a role model in the adherence to policies
