Furnishing a Future’s training program allows students the opportunity to learn a trade while providing beautiful, handmade tables, and dressers to Philadelphia Furniture Bank clients who are coming out homelessness and crisis situations.
My day job is at the Philadelphia Furniture Bank, where I spend my time helping case managers and their clients coming out of crisis situations select furniture for their new home. But my rest-of-the-time job is mom to my seven-year-old son. Until last week, these worlds really haven’t collided, but when my son decided to play soccer in our neighborhood, he was assigned to a team. Seventeen sponsored teams, only 1 of which was a nonprofit – and what team was he placed on?
The Philadelphia Furniture Bank hosted a grand reopening at our new space at 3650 I Street last week. We welcomed our member agencies, supporters, volunteers, staff, and friends to tour the new space and learn from our staff about the work we do at PFB.
Our new space added 5,000 square feet to our warehouse, which was a much needed expansion due to the continued demand for our services. We doubled the number of families served last year by furnishing 922 households, and those numbers are holding steady going into this fiscal year.
We are fortunate to receive regular inquiries from individuals and groups that want to support Pathways, and every little bit helps us to ensure that we're providing homes, restoring health, and reclaiming lives for those in need in our community.
Artist Diane Pieri has always looked for authenticity and beauty in her work. When she learned that the Philadelphia Furniture Bank lets families create beauty as they build a new life, she knew she had to get involved.
“When you speak something into existence, it’s amazing how it can grow.” Those words began the Philadelphia Furniture Banks open house this October, where several potential new partners experienced first-hand the amazing work the bank is doing.
