Preparing Your Community for Housing First *FREE EVENT*

Thirty years of research have shown Housing First to be an effective approach to ending chronic homelessness. The language of Housing First can be seen in federal housing policy briefs, and some jurisdictions require demonstration of Housing First principles as a condition of funding. But the implementation of Housing First proves to be a complicated task that spans across a siloed service delivery system. This training identifies essential ingredients in the recipe of Housing First implementation, exploring the process from identification of need all the way through obtaining funding. Despite the long history of successful outcomes for Housing First programs, community buy-in and navigating complex political environments in local jurisdictions can be a barrier to implementing Housing First. We will offer tips for navigating the political landscape and innovative funding conversations.

Session Facilitators:

Over the last 28 years, Bill Maroon, MA (he/him) has worked for various nonprofit organizations at the cross-section of housing, homelessness, and healthcare.  Bill has experience in street outreach, ACT Teams, Housing First, Supportive Housing, Case Management, and integrated health care. Prior to joining Pathways, Bill was the Director of Business Development and Innovation for Resources for Human Development (RHD) where he was an integral part of negotiating, developing, and implementing Assertive Community Treatment teams, Supportive Housing programs, and other programs focusing on social determinants of health for RHD. Bill is known for bringing hospitals, physical health managed care organizations (MCOs), nonprofits,  behavioral health MCOs, and the criminal justice system together to work towards ending homelessness. Bill has a Master’s Degree in Social Work Administration from Temple University.

Ryan Villagran, LSW (he/they) joined Housing First University in June 2021 as a Training Specialist. Ryan holds a Master of Social Work from Temple University with a concentration in Communities & Policy. His clinical background includes delivering psychiatric rehabilitation services in the mental health recovery model at a Community Integrated Recovery Center. Ryan also developed and coordinated a training program in a university setting for social workers serving transitional-aged youth and later taught a Human Behavior in the Social Environment course for graduate social work students. In addition to his professional social work, Ryan is involved in organizing efforts around ending mass incarceration and believes in the power of our collective imagination to dream of a better future centered around the most vulnerable members of our community.

ACE approval statement: Housing First University: a program of Pathways to Housing PA, provider #1759, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 01/12/2022 – 01/12/2025. Social workers completing this course receive 1 general continuing education credit.

Housing First University, a program of Pathways to Housing PA, can provide continuing education credits to licensed social workers in 48 of the 50 U.S. states and 10 Canadian provinces. Due to current regulations, CE credits cannot be offered to social workers in the states of New Jersey or New York. If you are not a Licensed Social Worker, please check with your board of accreditation to ensure this training meets your licensing needs.
